The Galactic Fiend Kraken, also known as the Space Kraken or Star Beast Kraken in Japan (星獣クラーケン, Hoshi-jū Kurāken), is a new boss introduced in Kid Icarus: Uprising. As its name suggests, it is a massive octopus creature that can swim in the oceans of space. The creature has a unique technological design with numerous digital membranes lining its head and parts of its tentacles. Unlike the typical octopus, the Space Kraken also only has four tentacles that are long enough to help it climb out of space dust. Based on remarks made in the game, it seems that Space Krakens are actually a species of monster that live in space, although Pit only encounters one in the game. It is the boss of Chapter 8, The Space-Pirate Ship where Pit fights it atop the Space Pirate Ship deck.
In Kid Icarus: Uprising
The Kraken is to be defeated in two stages, the only boss to do so. The first stage involves Pit defeating its four tentacles one at a time. They must be shot at numerously, with the final blow releasing hearts. The tentacles attack by throwing themselves over the angel or by punching Pit. Once all down, the Kraken's head pops up. The creature has five methods of attack. Its basic move is shooting a couple of water bubbles that are easily dodged. Light arrows coming from it's eyes are avoidable but hard to predict. The Kraken also fires a massive water burst from left to right or up to down. These are slightly easier to dodge but the most damaging attack. However, if the player walks up close to the head, the creature will throw itself over and crush Pit beneath. This, while extremely predictable, is a hefty price to pay for getting too close. Once the Galactic Fiend receives enough ranged attacks, it will go down allowing Pit to take the Three Sacred Treasures Case at ease.
In The Three Trials, Dyntos made a copy of the kraken in which Pit must fight.
Idol Description
A hulking leviathan making its home in the Galactic Sea. People, monsters, and even starships are no match for the Kraken's gaping maw. The scent of Pit's battle with the Space Pirates piques the monster's hunger, endangering everyone.
In Super Smash Bros. 4
The Kraken appears as one of the numerous collectable trophies in the 3DS version.
Trophy Description
A colossal cephalopod that travels the dark seas of the galaxy. It can detect the faintest ripples of light even from a great distance. Drawn by the battle with Space Pirates, a Space Kraken also attacks Pit during his adventure. Turn the tables on this sushi-to-be!
Trivia
- The Space Kraken is based on the legendary Kraken, said to be a massive squid-like monster of Norse mythology.
- The Space Kraken bears a striking resemblance to Octoroks of the Legend of Zelda series, having a similar color scheme and mouth structure.
- Because it resembles Octoroks, it also resembles Octoombas from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 where it was a direct reference to Octoroks and also appeared in space.
