Palutena (パルテナ Parutena) is the beautiful goddess of light, rightful ruler of Skyworld, the patron deity of Pit and the Centurions, and the guardian of humans. She is kindhearted and benevolent, as opposed to the cruel and malevolent Medusa. Despite being a divine goddess, Palutena also seems to be somewhat of a damsel-in-distress, as she was imprisoned and held captive by Medusa and needed to be rescued, but recently she has been given a much more active role as a major supporting character as Pit's greatest ally.

Appearance
Palutena has the appearance of a 22-year old woman with very long green hair reaching down to her lower legs, and is around 178 cm (5'10") tall. She has an overall very elegant and regal appearance fitting her title as the goddess of light. Her main outfit is a relatively simple-looking white dress with numerous gold ornaments to accommodate it. Interestingly, many of Palutena's design choices has parallels to Pit's, such as the gold laurel crown, red fibula, the vine-like patterns on the hems of her dress, brown-colored, sandal-like footwear, and the various gold accessories. She is typically depicted wielding her weapons of choice which is the gold staff with a blue handle and a mirror shield.

Palutena is generally a very kind and wise character (at least compared to most gods). She is shown to care about the human race and will go to great lengths keep them safe from harm. She was willing to banish her own co-ruler, Medusa, in order to stop the goddess of darkness from attacking and killing the mortals. Although she may be the guardian of the humans, it is important to note that Palutena does not view them as flawless beings, in actuality, she views them as quite selfish and destructive. However, she believes the gods are no better than humans when it comes to fulfilling egoistic desires or ideals, or in some cases, she believes gods can be far worse. Palutena also appears to be the only god to realize and admit to this when Dark Pit points it out. Ironically, this might be why she firmly believes humans are the closest to the gods and sees them worth protecting.

One very notable trait of the goddess of light is her outstanding wisdom, as she is one of the most knowledgable within the pantheon. Other characters have commented on her as being very smart or a "know-it-all". Palutena uses her vast proficiency to let Pit know enemies' weak points, and give other useful information and tips to him. She is also quite sharp and not easily fooled. The goddess is typically the first to notice any subtle changes that occur, including contradictions and inconsistencies in anyone's statements or situations. Palutena quickly noticed the number of Underworld troops didn't decrease, despite the Mirror of Truth being destroyed. She also found it suspicious that Thanatos avoided her question of why he didn't outrank Medusa. And later with Hades scheme with the Wish Seed, the goddess once again found out first that the seed was just a pile of lies. However, her great wisdom appears to have made her slightly arrogant, as Palutena sometimes refuses to admit to mistakes when being corrected by Pit.

Palutena has a very close relationship with Pit and shares a very strong bond with him, with which he returns with undying loyalty. Despite her mature appearance, she has been shown to have a very playful and mischievous side. Palutena often teases Pit, and even exploits his absolute fidelity by purposely putting him into dangerous situations in order to complete missions. One time, she purposely put pheromones all over Pit as a way to attract one of the wandering Hewdraw heads. These actions may make Palutena come off as unfriendly towards Pit, but it is obvious she does genuinely care for her angel. She frequently asks him if he's alright after sustaining injuries, and is always grateful for his service and properly thanks him where it is due. Palutena became filled with utter sorrow when the power of flight burnt off Pit's wings while trying to save Dark Pit and was willing to cheat death to bring him back.

Palutena is also noticeably more merciful compared to the other gods, as she would try to peacefully reason with her enemies first than use outright violence. She gave Medusa a final chance to retreat her army from the Overworld, and when Viridi started to attack humanity, Palutena attempted to persuade her out of it. She also tried to convince Arlon to joining her side to work together against the Underworld Army.

The goddess has a minor quirky side, as she has a habit of mixing up common phrases, such as in one of the tutorial videos for Uprising she erroneously calls Super Smash Bros. as "Super Bash Sisters". The goddess also has a knack for using large, complex vocabulary that confuses Pit. Similar to her angel, she appears to have a large appetite as she talks about how delicious octopus is during the Space Kraken fight, and omelettes later when mentioning Phoenix eggs. Despite her young looks, she is sensitive when it comes to the topic regarding her age and strongly dislikes being called “ma’am”.

Abilities
Abilities
Despite her playful personality, Palutena proves to be a powerful goddess. As the goddess of light, she has great power over the element, and is capable of performing potent magical abilities utilizing light, such as energy blasts, columns of light, and a bright flash of light used by her Mirror Shield to blind opponents. One of her most powerful attacks is called the “Glam Blaster” / ”Sacred Goddess Clobberlaser”, which involves a giant beam of vaporizing light that can disintegrate enemies. She is also the one who supplies Pit his Power of Flight and all his other powers. In Smash Smash Bros. 4, Palutena is capable of using these powers in combat herself. During battle, she uses levitation as a key method of getting around.
Despite her kind, and playful personality as well as her tendency to be the damsel in distress, Palutena proves to be a very powerful goddess. As the Goddess of Light, she has immense power over the element, and is capable of performing potent magical abilities utilizing light, such as homing energy blasts, creating light halo drones that follow her target and shoot light shots, columns of light, firing a massive light blast from her halo, surrounding herself in a pillar of light and charging at foes, and a bright flash of light used by her Mirror Shield to blind opponents. One of her most powerful attacks is called the "Glam Blaster" / "Sacred Goddess Clobberlaser", which involves a giant beam of vaporizing light that can disintegrate and one-shot enemies as powerful as the Hewdraw. Using her divine light magic, she is also able to charge and power the Great Sacred Treasure's cannon so that it could fire an absolutely massive laser to destroy Hades' physical form forever. She is also the one who supplies Pit his Power of Flight and all of his other powers. Unlike him however, she can use these powers as much as she wants with no limits. In Smash Smash Bros. 4, Palutena is capable of using these powers in combat herself and in the game she demonstrates great proficiency in melee combat with her staff and shield. During battle, she uses levitation as a key method of getting around. She has the power to summon her army of Centurions, Centurion Knights, Centurion Strongarms and Juggernauts at will and should they fall in battle she can revive them as much as she wants. She can do the same to Pit too. She possesses the power to create immensely powerful forcefields which she uses to protect her temple. She is able to control the size of this forcefield at will and only something as powerful as the Lightning Chariot is able to break through it.

Like most deities, she possesses some degree of omniscience (even claiming to have an all-seeing “Eye of Palutena”). For example, in Chapter 2 of Uprising, she demonstrates her godly insight regarding Magnus's past that he lost a child in the war and was close friends with Gaol despite him never mentioning this at any point. Palutena's vast knowledge allows her to know names and weaknesses of almost every enemy in the series.

Palutena has typical abilities shared by other gods such as telepathic communication and summoning large projections of herself. Some other powers of Palutena mentioned in Uprising and the anime shorts include the “power of cooling”, "power of weak-point exposure", “power of ninjary”, “power of caging”, and “power of maelstrom". The Palutena Bow and Silver Bow are two weapons that are explicitly stated to be created by the goddess of light herself, indicating Palutena has some prowess over weapon crafting. The Goddess of Light is also capable of powerful telekinesis as shown in Chapter 18 where she tosses large pieces of Skyworld itself at Pit. She also has the ability to put curses on others, as she was the one who cursed Medusa with her monstrous form as punishment.

The Goddess of Light is also capable of incredibly powerful telekinesis as shown in Chapter 18 where she tosses large islands and cities of Skyworld itself at Pit. During the boss fight against Medusa in Uprising, she is able to counteract Medusa's telekinetic attempts to send Pit away from her with her own telekinesis. She also chains Medusa's legs to the ground with her magic which nullified her ability to teleport. .She has the ability to put curses and banish others, as she was the one who cursed Medusa with her monstrous form and banished her to the Underworld as punishment. She can also turn Pit into a Specknose or a full-grown angel should he get the bad or good endings respectively in the original Kid Icarus. Along with the Power of Maelstrom, she also has other weather magic at her disposal such as creating powerful side winds to blow her enemies away or opening a path through a wall of storm clouds. She can create gate-like portals to transport herself and others. She also has the power warp/beam up people and objects to different locations at will.

Palutena and Medusa originally co-ruled Angel Land together. However, Medusa's hatred and destructive treatment towards the humans caused the light goddess to turn her into a hideous monster, and then banish her to the depths of the Underworld. The dark goddess then responded by creating an allegiance with the Underworld monsters and take over the rest of Angel Land. Palutena's Army fell to the Underworld forces, and the light goddess herself became imprisoned within the Palace in the Sky. As a last resort, Palutena used her remaining strength to send a magical Bow to her young, loyal angel servant, named Pit, who was trapped beneath the Underworld. Armed with the sacred weapon of the goddess, Pit went forward on to his quest to gather the Three Sacred Treasures to destroy Medusa and rescue Palutena.

In Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, Palutena has a nightmare of an army of demons attacking Angel Land, and becomes worried that it may be a message regarding the future of her kingdom. She calls upon a soothsayer to decipher her nightmare and is told this dream will eventually become a reality. With no time to waste, Palutena quickly summons Pit to prepare him for the upcoming battle with the Orcos. He is tasked in gathering the Three Sacred Treasures again from the Fortress guardians.

In Kid Icarus: Uprising, Palutena has a much more active role as the story's deuteragonist. The goddess of light discovers that Medusa has returned after 25 years, and is attempting to dispose the humans once more while seeking vengeance from her and Pit. In order to protect the people, Palutena calls Pit forth to help her defeat Medusa. The light goddess grants the angel the Power of Flight, which allows him to fly for five minutes before his wings burn up. Also this time around, Palutena will entrust Pit with the First Blade instead of the traditional Bow as the introductory weapon. Throughout the game, Palutena will continuously guide the young angel via telepathy.

Palutena (パルテナ Parutena) is the beautiful goddess of light, the rightful ruler of Skyworld, the patron deity of Pit and the Centurions, and the guardian of humans.

Characteristics

Appearance

Palutena has the appearance of a 22-year old woman[1] with green eyes, very long green hair reaching down to her lower legs, and is around 176 cm (5'9") tall, counting her heels[2]. She has an overall very elegant and regal appearance fitting her title as the goddess of light. Her main outfit is a relatively Greek-styled white dress with a chiton-like cloth over it held by her golden necklace that acts like a fibula/brooch, heart-like patterns and a red trim at the top, golden vambraces, sandal-like heels with a tall one on her left leg and a long white sock, numerous gold ornaments to accommodate it, along with a split to her thigh on the right side held by a red fibula.

In Kid Icarus, she wears a blue and yellow dress with a blue and gold tiara, a red necklace, and gold shoes. In-game, it is shown to be red and white.

In Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, she wears a white dress with a petticoat, along with a gold tiara. Noticeably, her hair is much shorter.

Personality

Because, of all creatures, humans are closest to the gods. Gods cannot intervene in mankind's affairs.

—Palutena's stance on humans.

Palutena's expressions from Uprising.

Palutena is generally a very kind and wise character.

Palutena uses her vast proficiency to let Pit know enemy weak points, and give other useful information and tips to him.

Despite her young looks, she is sensitive when it comes to the topic regarding her age and strongly dislikes being called "ma'am".

Abilities

Despite her kind, and playful personality as well as her tendency to be the damsel in distress, Palutena proves to be a very powerful goddess. As the Goddess of Light, she has immense power over the element, and is capable of performing potent magical abilities utilizing light, such as homing energy blasts, creating light halo drones that follow her target and shoot light shots, columns of light, firing a massive light blast from her halo, surrounding herself in a pillar of light and charging at foes, and a bright flash of light used by her Mirror Shield to blind opponents. One of her most powerful attacks is called the "Glam Blaster" / "Sacred Goddess Clobberlaser"[3], which involves a giant beam of vaporizing light that can disintegrate and one-shot enemies as powerful as the Hewdraw.

Like most deities, she possesses some degree of omniscience (even claiming to have an all-seeing "Eye of Palutena").

Some other powers of Palutena mentioned in Uprising and the anime shorts include the "power of cooling", "power of weak-point exposure", "power of ninjary", "power of caging", and "power of maelstrom". During one of the anime shorts, she also demonstrates the power to walk on water. The Palutena Bow, Palutena Blade and Silver Bow are three weapons that are explicitly stated to be created by the goddess of light herself, indicating Palutena has some prowess over weapon crafting.

Prior to Kid Icarus, Palutena and Medusa originally co-ruled Angel Land together.

After Medusa is defeated by Pit, Palutena thanks the angel and rewards him depending on how well he has performed throughout his adventure.

Manual Description

The Goddess of Light. She used to be the highest of the gods in Angel Land, but is now held prisoner by Medusa. The source of her power, the Three Sacred Treasures, were stolen away from her by Medusa.

Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters

In Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, Palutena has a nightmare of an army of demons attacking Angel Land, and becomes worried that it may be a message regarding the future of her kingdom. She calls upon a soothsayer to decipher her nightmare and is told this dream will eventually become a reality. With no time to waste, Palutena quickly summons Pit to prepare him for the upcoming battle with the Orcos. He is tasked in gathering the Three Sacred Treasures again from the Fortress guardians.

When Pit has collected all Three Sacred Treasures, Orcos will reveal himself and petrify Palutena. Pit must defeat the demon to save her.

Manual Description

The goddess of Angel Land.

Kid Icarus: Uprising

Concept art of Palutena

In Chapters 18-21, Palutena is controlled by the Chaos Kin, an evil wasp-like monster, and orders her Centurions to attack the humans and the Underworld Army. Pit, guided by Viridi and temporarily aided by Magnus, saves her by defeating the Chaos Kin in Chapter 21, The Chaos Vortex. While Palutena is being controlled, the lobby changes to Viridi's domain. After the Chaos Kin is defeated, the lobby becomes Palutena's again. In Chapter 24, The Three Trials, as part of the second trial, Pit must defeat a Pseudo-Palutena, an ugly mimic of the goddess.

Idol Descriptions

Palutena
The goddess of light and ruler of Skyworld. Palutena guides Pit through most of his journey, using her powers to help him protect the humans of the surface world from her archnemisis, Medusa, goddess of the Underworld.

Petrified Palutena
After Pit defeats the possessed Palutena, the Chaos Kin is unable to escape with the goddess. She turns her body to stone at the last moment, so the Chaos Kin can flee into the Chaos Vortex with only her soul.

Palutena (Rare)
Despite her reputation for wisdom and mercy, little is known about the history and motivations behind the goddess Palutena. What she lacks in military might, she makes up for in her brave champion, Pit.

Super Smash Bros. Series

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Palutena appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, in the game's extensive Adventure Mode: Subspace Emissary. She gives Pit the Sacred Bow of Palutena in order to fight the Subspace Army. Palutena has the honor of being the only non-playable ally character in the story. She also appears in Pit's Final Smash, known as Palutena's Army, where she summons Centurions to attack Pit's enemies. She's even featured as an unlockable trophy, only given once the player has completed the "Cleaning house in Skyworld" event. Like Pit, this is where her current main look debuted.

Trophy Description

The ruling goddess of Angel Land. Palutena showered the earth with rays of light, using her powers for the good of mankind. But Medusa, who in her hate for mankind was banished to the underworld, makes war on Palutena and wins, capturing and holding the goddess deep within a temple. Palutena entrusts Pit with a sacred bow and the task of defeating Medusa.

Palutena as she appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

Palutena was confirmed to be a new playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U on June 10th, 2014 at E3 2014. She has a move set inspired by the various powers from Kid Icarus: Uprising. She is also one of the few characters that have completely unique custom moves that can be altered around through customization. Palutena is available in the starting roster.

If Pit activates the Palutena's Guidance on Palutena's Temple, the goddess will appear and talk about certain fighters and give advice to Pit.

Palutena's Uprising voice actress, Ali Hillis, did not reprise her role in this game and was replaced by Brandy Kopp. According to Hillis, she was not available at the time.[4]

Trophy Descriptions

Palutena (3DS/Wii U)
NA Version: In Kid Icarus: Uprising, the goddess of light uses telepathy to communicate and grants miracles to support Pit on his adventure. In Smash Bros., she has special moves like Warp and Heavenly Light at her disposal. She's very adaptable—you can customize her into a long- or close-range fighter!

PAL Version: Said to be able to perform miracles, this goddess supports Pit in battle, using telepathy to communicate with him. She's no slouch on her own, either. She has a huge variety of moves you can customise and use to your advantage. Short or long range, the sky's the limit! Or maybe not. After all, she can teleport.

Palutena (Alt.) (3DS/Wii U)
NA Version: Palutena's Reflect Barrier side special deflects any attacks and projectiles that comes to her from the front. Unlike other reflective moves, you can leave this barrier in place and it will keep reflective. If you really want to ruin someone's day, you can push them over an edge using this move.

Unlike other fighters' reflective moves, you can deploy this barrier and then leave it to its own devices. You can also push opponents with it, so use it on someone who's teetering on the edge of the stage to push them off.

Black Hole Laser (Wii U)
NA Version: Palutena's Final Smash. After doing a divine twirl, she creates a black hole in front of her, drawing in her opponents. When she's got 'em where she wants 'em, she follows up with a wide laser beam that reaches from one edge of the screen to the other. It even changes directions slightly, just in case someone managed to avoid the black hole.

PAL Version: Palutena's Final Smash. After doing a divine twirl, she creates a black hole in front of her, drawing in her opponents. When she's got 'em where she wants 'em, the next step is a wide laser beam that reaches from one edge of the screen to the other. It even changes direction slightly, for that extra chance of taking out her foes.

Palutena as she appears in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Palutena returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, resembling how she does in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. However, her moveset has been altered, as her down special is both a Counter and Reflect Barrier, and her side special is now Explosive Flame. Unlike the previous installment, she will be an unlockable character and her moveset cannot be adjusted. Palutena is designated as fighter #54.

The goddess of light appears in Palutena's Guidance once more to give Pit advice on how to fight the other characters. She has brand new conversations for The Legend of Zelda characters (except Toon Link), Ike, Robin, the DLC fighters from Super Smash Bros. 4, previously cut characters, and the Ultimate newcomers.

Ali Hillis has confirmed she did not reprise as Palutena due to Ultimate being recorded non-union[5]. Brandy Kopp reprises Palutena from the last game. Aya Hisakawa returns to voice the goddess in the Japanese version. Palutena's in-battle voice clips are reused from Super Smash Bros. 4 in both languages.

Unlocking Methods

  • Awaken her fallen spirit in Adventure Mode: World of Light
  • Complete Classic Mode with Lucas. Palutena is the eighth character unlocked after completing Kirby's Classic Mode.
  • Play sufficent Vs. Matches, which causes Palutena to appear as the final Challenger in line.

Role in World of Light

In the opening cutscene, Palutena can be seen standing on a seaside cliff between Simon Belmont and Snake. All the fighters appear to have been summoned to battle the mysterious entity, Galeem, the Lord of Light. After Galeem unleashes his devastating attack, the goddess provides Pit and Dark Pit the Power of Flight so they can escape. Meanwhile, Palutena stays back and attempts to use her Reflect Barrier to hold off the light beam. Unfortunately, her courageous act is proven to be fruitless against Galeem's power and is instantly defeated. The loss of Palutena causes the two angels to lose their flight and also be caught in the light beams then vaporized. Along with the rest of the fighters (except Kirby), Galeem creates a false copy of Palutena to do his bidding.

Palutena in Palutena's Revolting Dinner

Palutena makes an appearance in all three shorts of the Kid Icarus 3D Anime. In Thanatos Rising, she plays a similar role as she does in Uprising as Pit's helper in battle, while in Medusa's Revenge she acts as bit of the narrator of the past. She is the main focus in Palutena's Revolting Dinner where she attempts to create a "vegetable surprise" for Pit and the Centurions, but a small error causes her dinner to become sentient and attack her.

NES Remix 2

Palutena appears in the Kid Icarus challenge after Pit defeats Medusa in NES Remix 2.

Yoshi's Woolly World

In Yoshi's Woolly World, Yoshi can obtain a Palutena-inspired costume by scanning her amiibo.

Super Mario Maker

Palutena appears as a playable skin exclusive to the Super Mario Bros. style in Super Mario Maker. It can be obtained by scanning the Palutena amiibo or unlocked by doing the 100 Mario Challenge. She has the same sound effects as Pit.

Trivia

  • The name Palutena is possibly a portmanteau or corruption of "Pallas Athena", also simply known as Athena, who was the Greek goddess of wisdom and war. After the Romans absorbed the Greek culture, this goddess became known as Minerva.
  • Palutena's shield looks similar to the Mirror Shield. Since Palutena owns the Three Sacred Treasures, it may be a personal variation.
    • In Japan, the Kid Icarus series is known as パルテナの鏡 Parutena no Kagami, which means "Mirror of Palutena". This may be referring to this shield; despite this, Palutena's mirror shield has yet to have a vital purpose in any of the games.
  • Her blue pallet swap in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U is based on her outfit she wore in the artwork for the first Kid Icarus game.
  • According to Masahiro Sakurai, the main theme of Kid Icarus: Uprising is also Palutena’s theme.[6]
  • Palutena and Viridi are the only characters to have two weapons named after them. In Palutena's case, the Palutena Bow and the Palutena Blade.
  • Interestingly, Palutena shares the same boss battle music as Medusa in Uprising.
