Despite it being an oceanic creature, the Mega Mussel is capable of surviving out of water as well as flying very quickly through the air. It rarely ever lands; rather, it prefers to continuously hover just above the ground by flapping its many leaf-like wings. At first sight, the creature will appear to be rather small, resembling a clam shell lined with numerous thorns. However, the inside of the mussel is extremely flexible, allowing it to open very wide to reveal its three pearl-like eyes. These eyes rotate around the central column of the Mega Mussel that keeps it held together, so destroying them will in turn collapse and obliterate the entire creature itself. You have to be very quick because after a while a destroyed pearl will regenerate. Luckily, the more pearls it resurrects, the longer it takes to resurrect others. However, these pearls are also capable of harnessing electricity that can be unleashed in short bursts, making the monster more dangerous when it has all of them intact. As a defensive measure, the pearls of a Mega Mussel will rotate faster as the creature grows weaker.

===[[Kid Icarus: Uprising]]===

''"Mega Mussel was designed to attack indiscriminately, and that's exactly what it does. When its scallop-like shell opens, its three pearly eyes fire a barrage of shots in all directions, decimating enemies that group together."''

Mega Mussels were among the very first enemies revealed in the game. They are first encountered during ''[[Heads of the Hewdraw]] ''at ground level, and appear to be common enemies throughout the rest of the story. They are also among the few enemies that appear to be invincible so long as their pearls are not exposed.

*In the very first trailer for ''Kid Icarus: Uprising'', Mega Mussels were originally shown to be larger and have as many as nine pearls within their shells. This number was likely reduced later in the game's development cycle to prevent the monster from being overpowered.
