In the North American version of Kid Icarus, passwords were used to continue a game after turning the system off, exactly the same way as the password system in Metroid. Upon a game over, players would see 24 characters arranged in 4 groups of 6 called Sacred Words in the actual game and would be entered after selecting continue on the main menu. Nintendo Power released several passwords in the Volume 1, Number 3 issue. Similar to Metroid, there were many codes that had strange, and game-changing effects.
