In the North American version of [[Kid Icarus]], passwords were used to continue a game after turning the system off, exactly the same way as the password system in ''Metroid''.  Upon a game over, players would see 24 characters arranged in 4 groups of 6 called ''Sacred Words'' in the actual game and would be entered after selecting ''continue'' on the main menu.  Nintendo Power released several passwords in the Volume 1, Number 3 issue.  Similar to ''Metroid'', there were many codes that had strange, and game-changing effects.

After defeating [[Medusa]], Pit gets the spear and helmet from the third ending but also, the statues and pillars from the fifth ending flash in the background temporarily.

TERROR  HORROR- Starts the game in stage 4-1 with maxed out score, hearts, and weapons, with and 2 strength arrows. Gives the same ending as the password above.

04OW00  8004YA- This challenge password starts the game in stage 1-2, starts you off with a debt of 4,095 hearts, makes it look like you have 99 feathers and mallets, but in reality you only get 1 when you get to a fortress and the feathers don't work, only one of the weapons from the [[Sacred Training Chamber]] will work while the other 2 can be collected but will only go towards a better ending, and you appear to have 5 strength arrows but you actually have just 1 and you can't upgrade it.  The only saving grace is that your arrows do 9 damage against bosses instead of the normal 1 damage.
