In the North American version of [[Kid Icarus]], passwords were used to continue a game after turning the system off, exactly the same way as the password system in ''Metroid''.  Upon a game over, players would see 24 characters arranged in 4 groups of 6 called ''Sacred Words'' in the actual game and would be entered after selecting ''continue'' on the main menu.  Nintendo Power released several passwords in the Volume 1, Number 3 issue.  Similar to ''Metroid'', there were many codes that had strange, and game-changing effects.  The passwords were never present in the Famicom, Virtual Console, or 3D Classic versions.
