::::::It appears that we won't be able to put the lockdown into effect just yet- apparently, RicketyTrigger doesn't have the authority to do it. Maxite installed MediaWiki onto the site, so we should try to contact him as soon as possible so we can stop the endless horde of spambots. By the way, do we have an alternative method if we aren't able to get in touch with Maxite? I'm trying to block all the bots that I can, but more and more of them are getting through now. At this rate, we may need to get a new site. EDIT: We could try restricting the right to create pages to users of Patroller level or above; as the spambots don't edit existing pages, that should effectively neutralize them for now. I also found MediaWiki's manual about how to restrict access to wiki services that might come in handy. http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Preventing_access#Restrict_account_creation (Sorry, I can't seem to remember the correct formatting.) I'm also asking for help from the other NIWA wikis- if worst comes to worst and we can't get in contact with Maxite, we could grant one of their administrators temporary bureaucrat rights long enough to implement e-mail confirmation and autoconfirmation. It might be a drastic measure, but it's no more extreme than locking down the entire wiki indefinitely.--Anothrgamer1234 22:46, 21 August 2012 (MDT)

:::::::I'm not sure if making someone a bureaucrat temporaily would fix this problem. I remember asking Starphoria on Skype awhile back to help fix the spam problem but he simply told me to ask Maxite about it (I left a message on Maxite's Skype so he can see it whenever he logs on it soon). —RicketyTrigger 01:35, 22 August 2012 (MDT)

::::::::Very well; we'll just have to hope he logs on soon, because it looks like he's the only one who can fix this mess; unfortunately, it's been so long since he was last on that I'm beginning to think he might have become completely inactive. I don't think that's the case, but if it is we'll need to find a new Technical Director. At any rate, it looks like we'll need to implement a CAPTCHA alongside the e-mail confirmation, as some spambots are able to circumvent the latter by supplying a legitimate "throwaway" e-mail address and confirming their accounts from there. There was a thread on the NIWA forums that had a solution for that, so we should use that as well. (Incidentally, my request for help on the NIWA forums has not been answered yet, but hopefully a response will come eventually.) Until then, we'll have to keep doing as much as we can.--Anothrgamer1234 17:29, 22 August 2012 (MDT)
