I think the English localization for Kid Icarus: Uprising is fantastic.
I really like the English localization for Kid Icarus: Uprising.
I'm always curious about the exact changes in games and animation from Japanese to English: The Whats and Whys.

Occasionally I get very motivated to make those kinds of observations, and with a game with as much dialogue as Kid Icarus: Uprising, there's this insatiable curiosity just to see how many of the jokes and exchanges are actually similar to their original.

I'm actually surprised on how much I am finding is similar!

I'm very interested in localization. You'll probably see me trying to fill in Japanese terms and names where they're missing.

I'm not really a buff on the language though, and I'll try not to pretend I am; Always feel free to correct any translations I attempt. :)

Localization

I'll use this section to note my own observations between versions of Kid Icarus: Uprising / 新・光神話 パルテナの鏡

  • Hades usually assigns suffixes to the protagonists in diminutive ways e.g. "Pitto-kun" and "Palutena-chan". The localization does not ignore this, having him use nicknames like "Pitty Pat" and "Pretty Palutena / Professor Palutena". My favorite localization comes from this line of Hades:

Hades: おはよう, ピットくん。そしてパルテナちゃん。 (Good morning, Pittokun. And Palutenachan.)

In English: Hades: Morning, Do-gooders!

Easy little catch-all with that high and mighty Hades-style flair! :)

  • In Chapter 12, Viridi calls Pit a "dweeb". In Japanese, she calls him a "ガガンボ" (Crane Fly; I think it literally means "Long legs"). Crane Flies have weak or otherwise very poor flying skills, and are known to fly erratically, or be easily caught. It's a great insult for Pit. It would carry over to English fine enough, but if the majority of people are like me, they may have to do extra research to know just how Pit is like a Crane Fly (I had to look it up, after all). I assume it was just easier to use an ad hominem attack; It also adds to Viridi's childish nature.
