Project Sora (プロジェクトソラ株式会社, "Sora" (空) is a Japanese word meaning "sky") is a defunct subsidiary of the Japanese company, Nintendo. The company is more specifically a subsidiary of Sora Ltd.; which was founded by former HAL Laboratory employee Masahiro Sakurai of Sora Ltd. among other companies are notable for developing Super Smash Bros. Brawl; a video game which Masahiro Sakurai directed. Project Sora was formed in 2009 by Satoru Iwata and Masahiro Sakurai after the success of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The company is mostly owned by Nintendo, while Sakurai's own Sora Ltd. and third party companies make up 28% of the rest of the ownership.
Project Sora recently worked on the development of Kid Icarus: Uprising and it is the only game they have developed since they have closed. As of June 30, 2012, Project Sora officially dissolved and the website has been updated with a message that states: "The Company was dissolved on 30 June 2012. Thank you very much for your patronage so far, this website will be closed as of July 31, 2012."
