Skullwing is the guardian of the Overworld's Fortress, guarding a Sacred Casket of the Three Sacred Treasures. It only appears in Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters. Skullwing's name is fairly descriptive; it's a humanoid skull with a pair of bat-like wings and a forked tail. It flies lazily around its chamber, and Pit can easily find cover in the corners. Though its flight pattern is clockwise, it will often make short deviations. Once in a while, if Pit passes underneath it, it'll drop a fireball that expands into three pillars at the point of impact. Skullwing has no other attacks, and is easily dispatched, especially if Pit is armed with the Long Bow. After being reduced to half of its maximum health, Skullwing's speed doubles and becomes much more fire-happy.
In Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters
Skullwing appears in this game as the second boss. It is also one of the three guardians that Palutena assigned to protect the Three Sacred Treasures and keep them safe from Orcos.
Manual Description
A monster with only a skull and the wings of a bat.
Trivia
- Skullwing bears a striking resemblance to a creature called a Bubble from the Legend of Zelda series of games. Both are humanoid skulls that have bat-like wings and glowing eyes, with the only real difference being that Skullwing has a tail.
- Despite Skullwing's demonic appearance and its role as a boss, the prologue in the manual states that Palutena herself entrusted the monster to protect one of the Three Sacred Treasures, likely meaning the creature is not necessarily evil nor on Orcos' side, and possibly even affiliated with the goddess of light. The same also may apply to the Fire Serpent and Minotaur.
