Daphnes (ダフネ Dafune) are recurring enemies in the Kid Icarus series. They are floral monsters that are able to fly by flapping their leaves and petals. They are among the few enemies that don't actually originate from the Underworld. Rather, they were mutated from normal flowers by Medusa's power.

Characteristics

Daphnes are one of only two plant-like enemies, the other being Holers. They are flowers that are capable of flight and have four large petals on their heads. Each of these petals are tipped with a poisonous thorn, although they rarely utilize this defense mechanism in battle. Daphnes use their leaf arms to fly, and are primarily green in color. In Kid Icarus: Uprising, however, they take on a more colorful appearance and have fake eyes to deceive their enemy. In addition, the purple interior of their heads can produce smaller explosive flowers that they can launch at their enemies.

These plant-like monsters are encountered in the Palace in the Sky. Once docile and unintelligent, they were corrupted by Medusa's evil influence and attack interlopers. In groups of four, they fly upwards, hoping to ambush Pit, similar to what Minos does.

Manual Description

A flower that blooms in the Palace in the Sky. It has been taken over by an evil spirit. It flaps its leaves to fly and its four petals are tipped with poisonous thorns.

Kid Icarus: Uprising

Daphnes are common enemies in Kid Icarus: Uprising. They now have false eyes and a rather innocent, colorful appearance to hide their dangerous nature. When attacking, the creature's petals will begin moving erratically as it releases flower-like projectiles from its head. The projectiles detonate when near Pit, causing him to receive considerable damage and knockback. These projectiles can potentially be destroyed if Pit causes enough damage to them.

Idol Description

Daphnes look like adorable flowers until they attack, revealing their terrifying true faces. They defeat their enemies by scattering explosive "Daphne mines" then move in to gobble up the remains.

Trivia

  • Daphne was a nymph chased by the god Apollo, who was shot by one of Eros' arrows. Praying to Gaia (or the river god Peneus) to avoid the attentions of the amorous Apollo, she was transformed into a laurel tree.
  • Based on its name, the Daphne may have also been visually inspired by a daffodil, which is a type of flower.
