Dark Pit, known in Japan as Black Pit (ブラックピット Burakku Pitto), is a major character in Kid Icarus: Uprising. Dark Pit is a doppelgänger of Pit and his primary rival. He was created after Pit destroyed the Mirror of Truth. He is nicknamed "Pittoo" (in English releases), "Tip" (in some European releases), or "Burapi" (in Japanese releases) by Pit. Depending on the current situation or agenda, Dark Pit will act as an enemy or ally to Pit.
Characteristics
Appearance
In terms of appearance, Dark Pit is nearly identical to Pit, with the most obvious difference being his dominantly black color scheme. Dark Pit has red eyes along with black hair and wings. He wears a black chiton, undershirt, shorts, bracers, and sandals lined with black fur. Like Pit, he wears a gold laurel crown, bracelet, and thigh ring. His scarf is dark blue in his Kid Icarus: Uprising artwork, but appears to be black in his sprites and in the Super Smash Bros. series. Parts of Dark Pit's chiton, undershirt, and shorts are edged with gold trim. His shorts also have alternating pattern of gold circles and crescents going up his front and back thigh areas. One of the few differences that is unrelated to color is the design on the hems of his tunic, as Dark Pit's has triangular patterns opposed to the vine-like ones on Pit's. The shape of his eyes are sharper-looking than Pit's. His eyebrows are comparatively thinner as well. Since he is a clone of Pit, he also has the appearance of a 13-year old with a height of 160 cm (5'3").
Personality
“ | But I, for one, refuse to be a puppet. These wings take ME wherever I want to go! | ” |
—Dark Pit stating his independence. |
Being a mirror of Pit, Dark Pit has a notably more serious personality. He rarely smiles outside of the occasional smirk. Dark Pit attacks with more aggression and will sometimes use cheap hits in order to win, such as when he kicks the unsuspecting Pit after Pandora was defeated. Unlike Pit, Dark Pit hates the idea of being bounded down as a servant and would rather follow his own orders. This is noticeable when Dark Pit refused to follow Pandora's orders despite being created to obey her and later refused Medusa's offer to help him take down Pit, likely thinking that she would take command of him in exchange. However, it does appear that he is willing to work for someone to get what he wants, shown when he joins the Forces of Nature to defeat Pit.
Dark Pit appears to be sensitive about his identity. In early parts of the game, he constantly fights Pit because he is supposedly "copying his act", and dislikes being called "Pittoo" by Pit and Palutena. Dark Pit does occasionally team up with Pit, either unintentionally or to complete a similar goal. He is commonly described as being mysterious, likely due to the fact the reason behind his desire to prove superiority over Pit is largely unknown, and his overall personal agenda is poorly understood. Because Dark Pit came from the Mirror of Truth, it's implied that Dark Pit is actually a personification of Pit's negative inner feelings.
Dark Pit is later shown to have a dry sense of humor, or at least an ego to match Pit's, such as when the two yell out their "pre-boss-battle rallying cry". Similarly to his light counterpart, he seems to enjoy playing other Nintendo games, as he mentioned Brain Age at one point. Dark Pit also appears to have inherited Pit's strong will and soul, as Hades comments how he finds the dark angel's soul to be very desirable due to its power. However, unlike Pit, Dark Pit is quite sharp and bright, and is far less gullible and naive. He sees things from a third party view due to his independence. This is shown when he accuses all the gods of being the cause of the chaos and wars, obviously not caring about the fact that they are powerful omnipotent figures. This also shows he is quite blunt and is not afraid to speak his mind.
Despite his name and appearance, it is important to note that Dark Pit is not villainous by any means. Sakurai specifically wrote the character to be a mirror image of Pit and not an evil twin[1]. He possesses the sense of what to deem right or wrong, and acts accordingly based on that sense. This can be seen when he finds out that Hades has been using human souls to craft his Underworld Army, and agrees that the evil deity needs to be stopped. Despite his lack of affiliation with the goddess of light, Dark Pit does seem to care about Palutena, as he aids in rescuing her from the Chaos Kin, and states that while eating souls is bad enough, going after the soul of a goddess is just vile. Also, despite everything he had done and what Pit had sacrificed for him, he's still somewhat closed off and perhaps uncomfortable with facing Pit after everything that had happened between them.
While Dark Pit still views Pit as his rival, he does seem to trust Pit to a degree, calling out for help from him when he ends up caught by the Chaos Kin. However, whether this sense of trust is due to genuinely caring about Pit or selfishness to stay alive is up for debate.
Abilities
As a clone of Pit, he has all the strengths of his lighter twin, but with Pandora's powers, Dark Pit is granted unlimited flight. The goddess's powers also appear to give him other magical abilities such as a dark energy charge. He later lost these abilities after Pandora was revived. Dark Pit also has a staff named after him, and is shown to be very proficient with it, but he prefers to fight with his trusty Silver Bow.
The game has also implied Dark Pit shares a strange inherent bond with Pit. If something happens to Pit, Dark Pit is affected by it. The reason behind the existence of this bond has never been clearly explained, but it could be due to the fact Dark Pit is a "flawed" clone.
In Kid Icarus: Uprising
Single Player
Dark Pit first appears in the main story at the end of Pandora's Labyrinth of Deceit after Pit cracks the Mirror of Truth, which was actually a part of Pandora's devious plan to create a servant angel for herself. However, the plan backfires as the doppelgänger angel refuses to take Pandora's orders due to the mirror shattering before Dark Pit's completion. After defeating the goddess of calamity, Dark Pit kicks his lighter half away then steals Pandora's remaining powers which gives him unlimited flight. In the following eponymous chapter, the dark angel is the main enemy throughout the level including the boss fight. During the aerial section, Dark Pit claims that he is the original, much to Pit's confusion. He possesses a prototype of the Palutena Bow called the Silver Bow (which eventually becomes his favored weapon), as well as many of Pit's other arsenal. Dark Pit later makes a brief appearance in Medusa's Final Battle, in which he acts as an ally to Pit and helps defeats the Underworld Gatekeeper. He makes another minor appearance in The Lunar Sanctum as a miniboss along with the Lunar Sanctum Control Center.
Dark Pit abruptly appears at the end of Palutena's Temple, where he uses the Lightning Chariot to widen the entrance to the Chaos Vortex as the Chaos Kin attempts to escape with Palutena's soul. He then joins forces with Pit to fight the Chaos Kin in The Chaos Vortex, both to deal with the waves of monsters that the parasitic monster creates and the Chaos Kin itself. The dark angel states the reasoning behind his alliance with his lighter half is due to that fact that destroying Pit will result to his own destruction. After they free Palutena's spirit, the remnants of the Chaos Kin drag Dark Pit and send him falling. Pit jumps down to save him and begs Viridi to let him fly again. Viridi hesitantly complies, warning Pit of the consequences, and Dark Pit calls out to Pit to help him. Pit successfully frees him from the Chaos Kin and Viridi sends them both back to Palutena in Skyworld. Dark Pit receives burns from the fall and asks how Pit is after the rescue, only to discover that Pit is unconscious and his wings have burned off.
Due to Pit's severe injuries, Dark Pit fights in his place during Scorched Feathers, clearing the way to the Rewind Spring in the Underworld to repay the debt he owes his lighter twin. While there, he discovers that Hades has been using souls to form his monsters along with eating them himself, and Dark Pit claims that it was "about the SICKEST thing [he'd] ever heard." Once he reaches the Rewind Spring, he is stunned and falls to the ground, then finds that the spring had resurrected Pandora based from the powers he stole from her. Dark Pit dispatches her along with her second form, then dips the unconscious Pit's wings into the spring. Pit revives and Dark Pit hurries off the platform, only to find that he has lost his ability to fly so Viridi saves him from falling.
The doppelgänger angel is later seen using the Lightning Chariot again, and saves Pit from Hades after he manages to defeat Hades's Heart in Lord of the Underworld. In the final chapter, the dark angel flies past his lighter twin after the defeat of Hades, and appears to be using Palutena's power of flight as Pit was using Viridi's. He flies behind Pit but doesn't say anything, instead, gives a small genuine smile before flying off to another direction.
Multiplayer
Dark Pit also appears in Together Mode as a playable character in Light vs Dark. When the Dark Team's gauge becomes empty, the last Fighter defeated on that team will respawn as the dark angel. It appears he and the Dark Team are just training in a friendly manner with the opposing Light Team, as both sides will help the loser get back on his feet at the end of the match.
Idol Descriptions
Dark Pit
A flawed clone of Pit created by the Mirror of Truth. He has most of Pit's strengths, and he can even fly with Pandora's powers. While he sees Pit as a rival, the two share a strange, inherent connection.
Dark Pit (Flying)
Being Pit's copy, Dark Pit was originally incapable of flight. However, he gains the ability when he absorbs Pandora's remaining power into his wings. And while he may not need help flying, he still shares a bond with his counterpart.
Super Smash Bros. Series
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Although Dark Pit technically does not appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Pit has a black palette swap that likely served as an inspiration for the character in Uprising. Masahiro Sakurai described this costume to be that of a "fallen angel"[2]. The popularity of this particular color change has also developed a popular fan nickname known as "Kuro Pit" ("Kuro" being the Japanese word for black).

Dark Pit appears as an unlockable playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U as a newcomer. He was initially teased in Palutena's trailer at E3 2014, in which he made an ambiguous cameo at the end. He was later formally announced on October 9, 2014, but he was leaked several weeks prior from the infamous ESRB leak.
Dark Pit is a clone of Pit, and uses his Silver Bow as his main weapon, but has a few minor differences, such as his side special, which is the Electroshock Arm. Despite his render depicting him wielding his Dark Pit Staff, he only uses it for one move—his Final Smash. He also has an unique victory fanfare which takes tunes from his iconic theme. In the complete roster, Dark Pit's slot is placed between Dr. Mario and Lucina, instead of next to his fellow Kid Icarus comrades, this is likely due to the fact that Dark Pit originally was just an alternate costume for Pit who was later turned to his own character, just like Dr. Mario and Lucina.[3]
In his Palutena's Guidance, Dark Pit reveals that some point afterwards the events of Uprising, he joined the ranks of the Forces of Nature as an officer. According to him, he and Viridi had "interests that overlap", likely meaning that both of them are interested in taking Pit down. This would also mean that Dark Pit still views his lighter half as his rival, despite the incident that occurred with the Chaos Kin.
Antony Del Rio, who portrayed Dark Pit in Kid Icarus: Uprising, returns to voice him in this game, but is not credited. In the Japanese version, Minami Takayama also reprises the role from Uprising.

Trophy Descriptions
Dark Pit (3DS/Wii U)
NA Version: Pit's mysterious, black-clad doppelgänger, Dark Pit. (Some call him Pittoo, but he really doesn't like that.) When he first appears, he immediately goes after both Pit and the Underworld Army. In Smash Bros., he uses moves a lot like Pit's, though both his bow and his Sacred Treasures* are different.
(*) In the Wii U version, it says "Final Smash" instead.
PAL Version: Pit's black-winged doppelgänger. Dark Pit, aka Pittoo (although he's not exactly fond of being called that), looks like Pit, moves like Pit and uses very similar attacks. He's a lot more aggressive, though, and doesn't take orders from anyone. He also has his own weapons, like his Silver Bow.
Dark Pit (Alt.) (3DS/Wii U)
NA Version: Dark Pit's Guardian Orbitars special puts up shields of light on either side of you to block attacks, deflect projectiles, and push back any enemies that are too close. You can even use the shields to protect against attacks from above and below. If they take too many hits, though, they'll vanish and become unusable for awhile.
PAL Version: Dark Pit's Guardian Orbitars special puts up shields of light on either side of you to block attacks, deflect projectiles, and push back any enemies who are too close. You can even use the shields to protect against attacks coming from slightly above or below you. If they take too many hits, though, they'll vanish and become unusable for a while.
Dark Pit Staff (Wii U)
In Kid Icarus: Uprising, Dark Pit used this staff to snipe at Pit from a mountaintop. In that game, it did much more damage when used at a distance. In this game, Dark Pit uses it to launch a high-speed horizontal blast that goes straight through obstacles. It can hit multiple foes in a row, but only the first will feel its full force.

Dark Pit returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, acting and resembling how he does in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. He is still a moveset-clone of Pit, now referred to as an "Echo Fighter". Like before, he is an unlockable character. Dark Pit is designated as fighter #28ε.
Antony Del Rio has confirmed to reprise his role as Dark Pit in the English version of the game[4], but like the previous installment, he is not credited. Minami Takayama returned to voice Dark Pit in the Japanese version. The in-battle voice clips in both languages consist of reused audio from the previous game. However, new voice lines were recorded for Palutena's Guidance, specifically for Wolf and the Ice Climbers.
Unlocking Methods
- Awaken his fallen spirit in Adventure Mode: World of Light
- Complete Classic Mode with Wario. Dark Pit is the eighth character unlocked after completing Samus's Classic Mode.

Role in World of Light
Dark Pit is one of the numerous fighters summoned to fight the mysterious entity, Galeem, during the World of Light campaign. Dark Pit is observed attempting to escape from Galeem's devastating attack along with Pit, while being granted the power of flight by Palutena. After Palutena's defeat, the two angels lose their flight then are instantly disintegrated by Galeem's light beams, transforming them into spirits. Along with the rest of the fighters (except Kirby), Galeem creates a false copy of Dark Pit to do his bidding.

Trivia
- In Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, there is an enemy clone of Pit named Putt.
- Dark Pit was "leaked" at E3 2011 when attendees shot footage of the Together Mode demo. Despite appearing in the demo, he was completely unacknowledged by Nintendo at the time, as Dark Pit was not mentioned in the E3 2011 trailer nor did he show up in any official screenshots or press releases. He wasn't formally revealed until three months later in a trailer from the Nintendo 3DS Conference in September.
- Humorously, Dark Pit's Japanese nickname, ブラピ Burapi, is also the nickname used among the Japanese for the actor, Brad Pitt.
- Dark Pit is one of two characters in Uprising that has played the role of an ally, boss, and playable character. The other is Magnus. Dark Pit is also one of the three characters who have been a mini-boss and a boss. The others are Hades and Hewdraw. Overall, Dark Pit is fought more than any other character in the game, being faced a total of five times, four times in Chapter 6 and once along with the Lunar Sanctum Control Centre in Chapter 13.
- Dark Pit's musical theme is supposed to give off a "duel from old Westerns" feel but also has a bit of a Spanish flavor, according to Masahiro Sakurai.[5]
- An earlier version of Dark Pit's Theme can be heard in the E3 2011 trailer that uses vastly different instruments. It had more emphasis on violins and a booming orchestra opposed to the more subdued acoustic guitars in the final version.
- Dark Pit appears to have inherited Pit's ambidexterity as he was dominantly right-handed in Uprising, but he has been shown to use his left hand for some of his moves in Super Smash Bros. 4 such as his neutral special, side special, and even his side taunt.
- Despite not actually being a villain, Dark Pit was placed in the Villains category for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate-themed Splatfest for Splatoon 2.
