Affiliation(s): Medusa
Enemy Type: Aerial

Belunkas (ホエーラ Hoeera) are giant, flying green whales that appear in Kid Icarus: Uprising. They are unquestionably among the largest enemies that Pit will encounter in the game, and act as vessels for carrying other Underworld monsters. These mighty creatures are encountered early on in Magnus and the Dark Lord, where a Belunka pursues Pit through a narrow canyon attempting to eat him.

Characteristics

For being somewhat common enemies, Belunkas are quite big and strong, although they rarely attack directly. Instead, they are able to spawn a variety of other monsters from a dark mist within their mouth. Otherwise, a Belunka will simply watch over the battle until Pit defeats the enemies it unleashes, causing the beast to spawn more until it is destroyed itself. It also has the most health of any enemy revealed so far, thus making its defeat all the more challenging, especially when flying. In terms of appearance, Belunkas have all of the features a typical whale would have, although its fins are large enough to serve as wings. It also wears a crown-like structure on its head, likely as a regal symbol of its high rank in the Underworld army.

Appearances

Kid Icarus: Uprising

Belunka is a living troop transport that loads smaller Underworld forces in its mouth - also its weak point - and then vomits them out onto the battlefield. Take down Belunka, and you'll also destroy all the enemies inside!

Belunkas are a common enemy found in both land and air battles, and are first encountered in Magnus and the Dark Lord.

Trivia

  • This creature is possibly based off Cetus or Ketos, a giant fish or whale-like monster from Greek Mythology.
  • Also, the Belunka's design may have possibly been inspired by the flying whales in the Frozen Hillside stage from Kirby Air Ride.
  • Belunka's name is possibly a play on the word "beluga", despite it looking more like a typical whale.
